Double Digit Seed Matchups

#11 Dayton vs. #10 Stanford is only the third matchup of double-digit seeds in the Sweet Sixteen in tournament history.

The other two were
  • 2011 - #11 VCU 72 #10 Florida State 71
  • 1997 - #10 Providence 71 #14 Chattanooga 65
VCU defeated Kansas 71-61 to advance to the Final Four in 2011.
Providence lost to Arizona in OT 96-92 in the Elite Eight 1997.

There have been 19 matchups of double-digit seeds in the Round of 32.  Since 2011, there has been at least one each year.

Michigan - VCU Tournament Facts

Here are some NCAA Tournament facts about Michigan and VCU:

Post-Game:
Michigan is in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1994.  The 19 years is their longest span between successive Sweet Sixteen appearances.

It is Michigan's 12th Sweet Sixteen appearance.

John Beilein is coaching in his 3rd Sweet Sixteen.  His previous two were as coach of West Virginia.

The 25-point victory for Michigan is their 5th largest in tournament history.  It is also their largest in the Round of 32.  Their previous high in this round was 23 vs. Florida in 1988.

It is VCU's biggest loss in 24 tournament games.  Their previous high was 15 vs. Syracuse in the 1984 Round of 32.

VCU's 53 points is the third fewest that Michigan has allowed in the tournament and the second fewest that VCU has scored.

VCU winning by 46 and then losing by 25 is a 71-point turnaround from Round of 64 to Round of 32.  That is a tournament record from Round of 64 to Round of 32.  The previous was Kansas in 1998 which had a 63-point turnaround.

VCU is now 0-5 on Saturdays.  Only Ohio is worse at 0-7.

Pre-Game:
Michigan is in the Round of 32 for the 16th time.  It is their third time since 2009.  They are 7-8 in the Round of 32.

Michigan is 3-0 vs. the Atlantic Ten:
  • 1992 - Defeated Temple 73-66 in Round of 64
  • 1993 - Defeated George Washington 72-64 in Sweet Sixteen
  • 1993 - Defeated Temple 77-72 in Elite Eight
Michigan is 9-1 when ranked #10 in the AP.  They were  ranked #10 in 1989 when they won the National Championship.

VCU is in the Round of 32 for the 8th time.  It is their third consecutive trip.  They are 1-6 in the Round of 32.

VCU is 1-2 vs. the Big Ten
  • 1980 - Lost to Iowa 86-72 in Round of 64
  • 2011 - Defeated Purdue 94-76 in Round of 32

VCU - Akron Tournament Facts

Here are some NCAA Tournament facts about VCU and Akron:

Post-Game:
The 46-point victory by VCU is their largest in tournament history.  Their previous high was 18 done twice in 2011 vs. Georgetown in the Round of 64 and Purdue in the Round of 32.

The margin of victory was tied for the 9th largest in tournament history until Syracuse recorded a 47-point victory later tonight.  It is now the 10th largest.

It is also the biggest loss for Akron.  Their previous high was 13 vs. Gonzaga in 2009 and Notre Dame in 2011 both in the Round of 64.

The 42 points by Akron is the fewest that VCU has allowed in 23 tournament games.  Their previous low allowed was 46 vs. Southern California in the 2011 First Four.

The 88 points was their second most points scored only surpassed by 94 that they scored against Purdue in 2011.

With VCU winning, it is the second time in Atlantic Ten history that 4 teams have won a tournament game.  The other time was in 1993 when George Washington, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Temple each won.

Shaka Smart is now 7-2 in the tournament.

Akron is now 0-4 in the tournament.

Pre-Game:
Shaka Smart has the most tournament wins in VCU history with 6.

This is the 3rd time that VCU has been a #5 seed.  The other two times, they won their first round game in 1981 vs. Long Island-Brooklyn 85-69 and in 1983 vs. La Salle 76-67.

Akron has their highest seed at #12.  They have lost all three of their previous tournament games.  Their closest game was a 6 point loss to Michigan in 1986.
