Championship Tidbits

North Carolina wins their 6th National Championship.  They pass Duke and Indiana for the 3rd most all-time.  Only UCLA (11) and Kentucky (8) have won more.

North Carolina is 6-5 in National Championship games.

Roy Williams wins his 3rd National Championship.  He ties Jim Calhoun and Bob Knight for 4th all-time behind John Wooden (10), Mike Krzyzewski (5) and Adolph Rupp (4).

North Carolina joins 2014 Connecticut as the only teams to defeat a #1, #2, #3 and #4 seed in the same tournament.  Before this tournament, North Carolina's last win over a top 4 seed was the 2009 National Championship game.

North Carolina is the first National Champion to win all of its last 3 games by single digits since Connecticut in 1999.

Gonzaga loses in their first championship game appearance.  They are the 4th consecutive team to lose in their first appearance.  The others are Butler (2010), Illinois (2005) and Georgia Tech (2004).  The last team to win in their first appearance was Maryland in 2002.

Mark Few is now third all-time in most tournament wins without a championship with 26.  Only Eddie Sutton (39) and Bob Huggins (31) have more.

Gonzaga becomes the 25th team to enter the tournament with 1 or fewer losses that fails to win the championship since Indiana won in 1976.  There have been 77 teams enter the tournament with 1 or fewer losses.  Only 13 have won the championship.

Gonzaga is 0-8 vs. #1 seeds.  Only Temple and Arkansas have a worse record at 0-9.

Gonzaga is 0-8 vs. teams ranked in the top 6 of the AP poll.  They are tied with Creighton for the worst record all-time.

Losing title game and returning next year

North Carolina is the first team since Butler in 2011 to return to the championship game after losing the previous year.  Here are the results for teams that lost one year and returned:

Final Four Tidbits

This year's final four is the first to feature teams making their first appearance since 1996 when both Massachusetts and Mississippi State made their first appearance.

It is the first time that two teams making their first final four appearance are playing each other in the National Semifinals since 1973 when Memphis State played Providence.

Frank Martin, Mark Few and Dana Altman are all making their first final four appearance.  The last time at least 3 coaches all made their first appearance in the same final four was 2006 - Jim Larranaga (George Mason), John Brady (Louisiana State), Ben Howland (UCLA).

The last time that two coaches were making their first final four appearance against each other in the National Semifinals was in 2007 when Thad Matta coached Ohio State against Georgetown coached by John Thompson III.

This is the first year since 2012 that all four teams are from a different conference.

Gonzaga is the 25th team to enter the tournament with zero or one loss since Indiana won in 1976 with no losses.  Gonzaga is only the 9th to advance to the final four and the 5th to advance to the championship game.  None have won the championship.

Gonzaga is in their first ever championship game and the first for the West Coast Conference since San Francisco won in 1956.

North Carolina is in the championship game for the 11th time and for the 2nd straight year.  They are the first team to go to consecutive championship games since Butler in 2010-11.

The last team to win the championship one year after losing the championship game was Kentucky in 1998.

North Carolina is 11-9 in National Semifinal games.  Oregon is 1-1.

North Carolina is the second straight AP #6 team to advance to the National Championship game.  Villanova was #6 last year.

Oregon's loss is their first vs. an ACC team.  They are 2-1.

Both winning teams scored 77 points.  It is only the third time that both winning teams scored the same number of points.  The other years were 1948 (Kentucky 60 Holy Cross 52; Baylor 60 Kansas State 52) and 1991 (Duke 79 UNLV 77; Kansas 79 North Carolina 73)

Elite Eight Tidbits - Sunday Edition

South Carolina is in the Final Four for the first time in school history.  They are the first SEC team in the Final Four other than Kentucky or Florida since 2006 when LSU went to the Final Four.

South Carolina is the fourth #7 seed to advance to the Final Four in tournament history.  It is the third time in 4 years that a #7 seed has been in the Final Four (2014-Connecticut, 2015-Michigan State)

It is the first time ever that a team from the state of South Carolina has been in the Final Four.

South Carolina is the 6th unranked team this decade to advance to the Final Four (2011-VCU, 2011-Butler, 2013-Wichita State, 2014-Kentucky, 2016-Syracuse)

South Carolina's victory over Florida is the 3rd all-time meeting between SEC teams in tournament history.  The other two were in 1986 when Kentucky defeated Alabama 68-63 in the Sweet Sixteen and LSU defeated Kentucky 59-57 in the Elite Eight.

South Carolina had 4 tournament victories before the tournament.  That is the fewest victories coming into the tournament for any Final Four participant since George Mason had no wins coming into the 2006 tournament.

Florida is 5-4 in the Elite Eight.

Florida is 2-5 vs. #7 seeds.  The 5 losses is the most all-time.  3 of the 5 losses have been when Florida was the higher seed.

This was Florida's first tournament loss playing in New York.  They are 7-1.

North Carolina is in their 20th Final Four in school history.  The 20 Final Fours is the most all-time.

North Carolina is 20-8 in the Elite Eight.

North Carolina is 3-1 vs. Kentucky in the tournament.  All four games have been in the Elite Eight.  They also defeated Kentucky in the 1977 Elite Eight and the 1995 Elite Eight.  They lost to Kentucky in the 2011 Elite Eight.

Elite Eight Tidbits - Saturday Edition

Gonzaga is in the Final Four for the first time in school history.

Gonzaga is the first West Coast Conference team in the Final Four since San Francisco made 3 straight appearances from 1955-57.  This is the 4th appearance by a West Coast Conference team.

Gonzaga's win ends an 11-game losing streak in the Elite Eight by West Coast Conference teams.

Gonzaga is 1-2 in the Elite Eight.  West Coast Conference teams are 4-13.

Gonzaga is 2-0 vs. Xavier.  They also defeated Xavier 79-75 in the 2006 Round of 64.

Gonzaga's 24-point win is their second largest in tournament history (47 games).  Their largest is 27 vs. Valparaiso in the 2004 Round of 64.

Mark Few had the most tournament wins (25) coming into the game without a Final Four.  With the win, John Chaney takes back the lead with 23.  Sean Miller is the active leader with 19.

Xavier and Gonzaga came into the game with the most tournament wins (27) without a Final Four.  With the loss, Xavier remains the loan leader in that category.

With Oregon making the Final Four, the largest Final Four drought now belongs to Duquesne who last went in 1940.

Oregon is 1-1 vs. Kansas.  They had lost to Kansas 104-86 in the 2002 Elite Eight.

Oregon is 2-5 in the Elite Eight.

Oregon is the first Pac Twelve team in the Final Four since UCLA made 3 straight appearances from 2006-08.  This is the 34th appearance for a Pac Twelve team.

Oregon's win is their first ever vs. a #1 seed.  They are 1-4.  The highest seed they had ever defeated before tonight was #4.

Kansas misses the Final Four as a #1 seed for a record 10th time (out of 13 times).  They have failed to make the Final Four in their last 5 appearances as a #1 seed.

Bill Self is now 2-7 in Elite Eight games.  The 7 losses are the second most all-time.  Only Adolph Rupp had more at 9.  He was 6-9 in Elite Eight games.

All of Self's Elite Eight losses are since 2000.  He has 3 more Elite Eight losses than any other coach during that time frame.  Sean Miller is second with 4.  The losing coach of tomorrow's North Carolina and Kentucky game will tie Miller with 4.

Kansas was the 7th team to score 90 or more points in their first three tournament games.  Their 60 points in the Elite Eight was the fewest points scored out of the 7.

Kansas is 14-9 in the Elite Eight.

Kansas' 14-point loss is their largest ever in an Elite Eight game.  Their previous worst was 13 to UCLA in 2007.

Oregon's 69-68 victory is the first time they have ever won a tournament game by 1 point.  They are 1-1 in games decided by 1 point.  They lost to Seton Hall 72-71 in the 2000 Round of 64.

Michigan is 12-2 in the Sweet Sixteen.  They have the 2nd best winning percentage in the Sweet Sixteen all-time (minimum 5 games).  Oregon is 5-1 in the Sweet Sixteen.  They are tied with Oregon State for the 3rd best winning percentage in the Sweet Sixteen all-time.  Only Temple at 7-0 is better than both.

Round of 32 Tournament Tidbits - Saturday Edition

West Virginia is in the Sweet Sixteen for the 2nd time in three years.  They are now 10-11 in the Round of 32.

West Virginia's win over Notre Dame is their first ever against a #5 seed.

West Virginia is now 8-6 when playing in New York.  The 8 wins ties Villanova for 5th most.

West Virginia scores 80 or more points in both Round of 64 and Round of 32 in the same tournament for the first time in school history.  This is the 11th time they have played in both rounds.

Notre Dame fails to reach the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2014.  They had been to the Elite Eight in the previous two years.

Notre Dame is now 17-12 in the Round of 32.

Notre Dame has never defeated a Big Twelve team in the tournament.  They are 0-2.  Their other loss was 76-58 to Iowa State in the 2013 Round of 64.

Notre Dame is 0-2 as a #4 seed vs. #5 seeds.  Their other loss was 87-84 (OT) to Missouri in 1980.

The loss for Notre Dame is their first in New York.  They are now 3-1.

Notre Dame is now 2-6 on March 18.  The 6 losses is tied with Texas for the most all-time.

First Round Tournament Tidbits - Friday Evening Edition

Kansas is in the Round of 32 for the 11th straight year.  They are now 32-2 in the Round of 64.

Kansas is now 9-4 in the state of Oklahoma.  The 9 wins is the most by any team.

First Round Tournament Tidbits - Friday Afternoon Edition

Michigan wins their 4th straight Round of 64 game and is in the Round of 32 for the 4th time in 5 years.  They are now 15-4 in the Round of 64.

Michigan State is now 2-0 vs. Oklahoma State in the tournament.  They also defeated Oklahoma State 75-72 in the 1992 Sweet Sixteen.

Michigan's win is their first ever as a #7 seed.  They have now won at least one tournament game as every seed from #1 to #11 except #5.  Only Villanova has won games as more seeds (11).

Oklahoma State has now lost in the Round of 64 for the fifth consecutive time.  Their last tournament win was in 2009.  They are now 12-8 in the Round of 64.

Oklahoma State has lost 6 straight overall.  Their longest losing streak before the current one was 3.  The only teams from the 6 power conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC) that have longer tournament losing streaks are Nebraska and Oregon State with 7.  Oklahoma also lost 6 straight from 1990 to 1998.

Oklahoma State is 0-5 since 2010.  Only New Mexico State (see below) has a worse record this decade.

Oklahoma State's 91 points is the most by the losing team in a non-overtime game in the Round of 64 since UAB defeated Washington 102-100 in 2004.  It is also the most points Oklahoma State has scored in a loss.  Their previous high was 80 in an 82-80 loss to Tulsa in the 1994 Round of 32.

Baylor is in the Round of 32 for the first time since 2014.  They had lost the in the previous two tournaments.  They are now 4-4 in the Round of 64.

Seton Hall loses their 3rd straight Round of 64 game.  Their last tournament win was in 2004.  They are now 7-4 in the Round of 64.

Oregon is in the Round of 32 for the fifth consecutive year.  They are now 7-4 in the Round of 64.

Oregon's win is their 8th all-time in California.  Only UCLA (27 as of this afternoon) and Arizona (17) have more wins in California.  Oregon is 8-1 when playing in California.

Rhode Island wins their first tournament game since 1998 when they defeated Valparaiso in the Sweet Sixteen.

First Round Tournament Tidbits - Thursday Evening Edition

Xavier is in the Round of 32 for the third consecutive tournament and the 8th time in 11 years.

Xavier is 8-1 in their last 9 Round of 64 games and is now 16-8 all-time.

Xavier's win is their first ever as a #11 seed.  They are now 1-3.

Maryland loses in the Round of 64 for the first time since 1997.  They had won their last 12 Round of 64 games.  They are now 19-3 in the Round of 64.

Maryland is now 2-6 vs. the Big East.  The 6 losses are the most vs. any single conference.

Maryland loses to an #1 seed for the first time.  They are now 5-1.

Villanova is in the Round of 32 for the fourth consecutive tournament.  It is their longest streak since the were in seven straight from 1980-1986.

Jay Wright's victory is his 21st as the coach of Villanova.  It passes Rollie Massimino for the most tournament wins in school history.

St. Mary's wins a Round of 64 game for only the second time in school history.  Their other victory was over Richmond 80-71 in 2010.  They are now 2-6 in the Round of 64.

St. Mary's is now 2-0 vs. the Atlantic Ten.

St. Mary's win is their first ever as a higher seed.  They were previously 0-2 when seeded higher than their opponent.

VCU has lost in the Round of 64 3 out of the last 4 years.  They are now 9-7 in the Round of 64.

Florida State wins their third straight Round of 64 game.  They won in their last appearance in 2012 and in 2011.  They are now 8-4 in the Round of 64.

This is the 4th time that Florida State has been a #3 seed.  They have won in the Round of 64 each time.  They are 4-0 vs. #14 seeds.

This is the first time that Florida Gulf Coast failed to win a game in the tournament.

Virginia Tech loses in the Round of 64 for the first time since 1986.  They won in their last two tournament appearances in 1996 and 2007.

Iowa State is in the Round of 32 for the 5th time in 6 years.  They are 12-6 in Round of 64.  They have won 10 of their last 12 Round of 64 games.

Iowa State is now 3-0 vs. #12 seeds.

Nevada is now 3-4 in the Round of 64.  They had won 3 of their last 4 Round of 64 games before the loss today.

Arizona is in the Round of 32 for the 4th time in 5 years.  They are now 20-11 in the Round of 64.

Arizona is now 8-2 playing in the state of Utah.  Only UCLA (10) and UNLV (9) have more wins in Utah.  All 8 wins have been in Salt Lake City which is the most my any team playing in Salt Lake City.

Arizona's 100 points are the most that they have scored in a tournament game since they defeated Eastern Illinois 101-76 in the 2001 Round of 64.  It is the third time they have scored 100 points in a tournament game.

North Dakota loses their first game ever played in the NCAA Tournament.  New teams are now 2-1 with Northern Kentucky and Jacksonville State playing their first games tomorrow.

There were only 2 upsets today.  The last time that there were 2 or fewer upsets on the first full day of the tournament was 2012.

First Round Tournament Tidbits - Thursday Afternoon Edition

Notre Dame's 60 points were their fewest points in a tournament win since 1987 when they defeated Texas Christian 58-57 in the Round of 32.  They had 13 wins in between the two games.

Notre Dame is in the Round of 32 for the third consecutive tournament for the first time since 2003.

Notre Dame's win is their 7th as a member of the ACC.  It is their most as a member of any conference.  They had 6 as a member of the Big East.  They won 25 tournament games before joining a conference.

Princeton has now lost 5 consecutive tournament games which ties the longest tournament losing streak by Princeton in their history.

Princeton is 2-7 all-time in the tournament in games decided by 1 or 2 points.

Virginia's win is their first ever tournament win over a team from the state of North Carolina.  They previously had lost to North Carolina 78-65 in the 1981 National Semifinals and to North Carolina State 63-62 in the 1983 Elite Eight.

Number One Seeds

Kansas and North Carolina repeat as #1 seeds this year.  It is the first time since 2011 that there has been a repeat #1 seed.  Kansas and Duke repeated as #1 seeds that year.

Villanova is a #1 seed for the 3rd time in school history.  The last time they were a #1 seed was in 2015 when they lost to North Carolina State 71-68 in the second round.  They are 4-2 as a #1 seed.  It is the 7th time in 9 years that the Big East has had a #1 seed.

Kansas is a #1 seed for the 13th time in school history.  The last time they were a #1 seed was in 2016 when they lost to Villanova 64-59 in the Elite Eight.  They won the National Championship as a #1 seed in 2008.  They are 32-11 as a #1 seed.  The only Big Twelve teams other than Kansas to get a #1 seed were Texas and Oklahoma in 2003.

North Carolina is a #1 seed for a record 16th time in school history.  The last time they were a #1 seed was in 2016 when they lost to Villanova 77-74 in the National Championship Game.  The won the National Championship as a #1 seed in 1982, 1993, 2005 and 2009.  They are 55-11 as a #1 seed.  The 55 wins is the most all-time.  This is the 4th consecutive year and the 13th out of the last 14 that the ACC has had a #1 seed.

Gonzaga is a #1 seed for the 2nd time in school history.  The last time they were a #1 seed was in 2013 when they lost to Gonzaga 76-70 in the second round.  They are 1-1 as a #1 seed.  They are the only West Coast team to ever be a #1 seed.
