Round of 32 Tournament Tidbits - Saturday Edition

West Virginia is in the Sweet Sixteen for the 2nd time in three years.  They are now 10-11 in the Round of 32.

West Virginia's win over Notre Dame is their first ever against a #5 seed.

West Virginia is now 8-6 when playing in New York.  The 8 wins ties Villanova for 5th most.

West Virginia scores 80 or more points in both Round of 64 and Round of 32 in the same tournament for the first time in school history.  This is the 11th time they have played in both rounds.

Notre Dame fails to reach the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2014.  They had been to the Elite Eight in the previous two years.

Notre Dame is now 17-12 in the Round of 32.

Notre Dame has never defeated a Big Twelve team in the tournament.  They are 0-2.  Their other loss was 76-58 to Iowa State in the 2013 Round of 64.

Notre Dame is 0-2 as a #4 seed vs. #5 seeds.  Their other loss was 87-84 (OT) to Missouri in 1980.

The loss for Notre Dame is their first in New York.  They are now 3-1.

Notre Dame is now 2-6 on March 18.  The 6 losses is tied with Texas for the most all-time.

Wisconsin is in their 4th straight Sweet Sixteen which is the longest active streak.  They are now 10-6 in the Round of 32.

Wisconsin defeats a #1 seed in the Round of 32 for the second time in tournament history.  They also defeated #1 seed Arizona in 2000.  They join Boston College, North Carolina and UCLA as the only teams to have multiple wins over #1 seeds in the Round of 32.

Wisconsin is now 7-2 as a #8 seed.  The 7 wins is tied for the most Kentucky, North Carolina, UCLA and Villanova.

Villanova becomes the 5th defending champion in the last 8 years that failed to reach the Sweet Sixteen.  Others were Connecticut in 2015, Kentucky in 2013, Connecticut in 2012 and North Carolina in 2010.

Villanova loses in the Round of 32 for the 3rd time in 4 years as a top 2 seed.  They have now lost 4 times as a #1 or #2 seed in the Round of 64.  Only Kansas has more such losses with 6.

All of Villanova’s losses as a #1 or #2 seed are since 2010.  Villanova is now 16-12 in the Round of 32.

Gonzaga is in the Sweet Sixteen for the 3rd consecutive year.  They are now 8-8 in the Round of 32. 

Gonzaga is 6-3 playing in the state of Utah.  The 6 wins is tied with North Carolina for the 4th most.  UCLA (10), UNLV (9) and Arizona (9) are the only ones with more.

Gonzaga is now tied (with Ohio State) for a tournament best 6-0 on March 18.

Northwestern fails to get to the Sweet Sixteen in their first ever tournament.  The only teams to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in their first ever tournament (since 1985) are:

  • Florida Gulf Coast (2013)
  • Florida (1987)
  • Cleveland State (1986)
Xavier is in the Sweet Sixteen for the 2nd time in 3 years.  They are now 8-9 in the Round of 32.

Xavier's win is their first against an ACC Team in the tournament.  They are now 1-4 vs. the ACC.

Xavier wins as the lower seed for the 11th time which is tied for the 4th most all time behind Michigan State (17), Villanova (17) and UCLA (12).

Xavier is now 6-1 in Florida which is tied for the 2nd most all-time behind Florida with 11.

Xavier's 25-point win is their largest in tournament history (52 games).  Their previous high was 19 points against Mississippi in the 2015 Round of 64.

Florida State is now 4-7 in the Round of 32.

Florida State's loss is their first in Florida.  They are now 3-1 playing in their home state.

Florida State's 25-point defeat is their largest margin of defeat in tournament history tied with a 25-point loss to Kentucky in the 1993 Elite Eight.

Butler is in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2011.  They are now 6-5 in the Round of 32.

Butler is now 9-3 on Saturdays.  The .750 winning percentage is the 3rd best (min. 10 games) for tournament games on Saturdays.  Wisconsin (including their win earlier today) is best at 14-3 (.824) and Duke 34-8 (.810) is 2nd.

Middle Tennessee is now a tournament worst 0-6 in the Round of 32.

Arizona is in the Sweet Sixteen for the 4th time in 5 years.  They are now 18-4 in the Round of 32.

Arizona is now 9-2 playing in Utah.  That 9 wins is tied with UNLV for 2nd, one behind UCLA who has 10.

St. Mary's loses in the Round of 32 for the first time.  They are now 1-1.

Florida is in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2014.

Florida has now won 7 straight Round of 32 games.  They are now 11-4 in the Round of 32.

Florida is 2-0 vs. Virginia in the tournament.  They also defeated Virginia 71-45 in the 2012 Round of 64.

Florida's win is their first over an ACC team in the tournament.  They are 1-1 vs. the ACC.

Florida is now 11-2 playing in their home state.  The 11 wins is a tournament best.

Virginia is now 9-6 in the Round of 32.

Virginia's 39 points is their fewest points in tournament history (50 games).  Their previous low was 45 also against Florida in the 2012 Round of 64.

Purdue is in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2010.  They are now 9-13 in the Round of 32.

Purdue is 5-3 vs. the Big Twelve.  Only Kentucky has more wins vs. Big Twelve with 6.

Purdue is now tied with Louisville for the best record playing in Wisconsin at 4-0.

Iowa State is now 5-7 in the Round of 32.
