Sweet Sixteen Tidbits - Thursday Edition

Oregon is in the Elite Eight for the 2nd straight year and the 7th time overall.

Oregon is 6-1 as a #3 seed.  Only Connecticut has a better winning percentage at 6-0.

Oregon is 3-0 vs. #7 seeds.  Connecticut and North Carolina State at 4-0 have the best records.

Oregon's 69-68 victory is the first time they have ever won a tournament game by 1 point.  They are 1-1 in games decided by 1 point.  They lost to Seton Hall 72-71 in the 2000 Round of 64.

Michigan is 12-2 in the Sweet Sixteen.  They have the 2nd best winning percentage in the Sweet Sixteen all-time (minimum 5 games).  Oregon is 5-1 in the Sweet Sixteen.  They are tied with Oregon State for the 3rd best winning percentage in the Sweet Sixteen all-time.  Only Temple at 7-0 is better than both.

The loss for Michigan ends a 6-game winning streak in the Sweet Sixteen.

Michigan is 1-4 against the Pac 12.  This is the first time they have played a Pac 12 team other than UCLA in the tournament.

Michigan loses to a #3 seed for the first time.  They are 2-1.

The loss is the first time that Michigan has ever lost a tournament by 1 point.  They are 3-1 in games decided by 1 point.  The last time they had a 1-point game in the tournament was when they defeated Seton Hall 80-79 in overtime in the 1989 National Championship Game.

Gonzaga is in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015 and the 3rd time overall.

Gonzaga is 3-5 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Gonzaga is 2-0 vs. West Virginia.  They also defeated West Virginia 77-54 in the 2012 Round of 64.

Gonzaga's game against West Virginia was their first against a #4 seed.  They have now played all 16 seeds.  The only seed they have never defeated is #1.

Gonzaga's win is their first ever on March 23.  They previously had the worst record on March 23.  They are 1-5.

West Virginia is 3-7 in the Sweet Sixteen.

West Virginia is 1-3 vs. #1 seeds.

Kansas is in the Elite Eight for the 2nd straight year and the 23rd time overall.

Kansas is 21-9 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Kansas is 3-1 vs. Purdue.  The also defeated Purdue 63-60 in the 2012 Round of 32 and 75-61 in the 1997 Round of 32.

Kansas becomes only the second team to defeat teams from the same conference in the Round of 32 and Sweet Sixteen in the same tournament defeating two Big Ten teams (Michigan State and Purdue).  The other was UCLA in 1979 when they defeated Pepperdine and San Francisco from the West Coast Conference.

Kansas is 24-7 playing in Missouri.  The 24 wins is a tournament best.

Kansas is 21-3 on Thursdays.  Only Connecticut (21-2) has a better winning percentage (min. 5 games)

Kansas is only the 7th team to score 90 or more points in their first 3 tournament games.  Here are the other 6 and their final tournament result:

Michigan and Connecticut scored at least 90 in the Elite Eight also.

Purdue is 4-6 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Purdue's 32-point loss is their largest in tournament history (66 games).  Their previous high was 22 points vs. Temple in the 1999 Sweet Sixteen.

The 98 points allowed by Purdue is also the most they have allowed in tournament history.  The previous high was 95 vs. Northeastern in the 1987 Round of 64.  The most they had ever allowed in a Sweet Sixteen game was 78 vs. in 1994 vs. Kansas.

Purdue is 0-6 vs. #1 seeds.  Their average margin of defeat in those 6 games is 14.7 points.

Xavier is in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008 and the 3rd time overall.

All three of Xavier's Elite Eights have been vs. a #1 seed.

Xavier is 3-5 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Xavier is 1-1 vs. Arizona.  They lost to Arizona 68-60 in the 2015 Sweet Sixteen.

Xavier and Gonzaga are tied with the most tournament wins without a final four with 27.

Arizona is 11-8 in the Sweet Sixteen.
