First Round Tournament Tidbits - Friday Afternoon Edition

Michigan wins their 4th straight Round of 64 game and is in the Round of 32 for the 4th time in 5 years.  They are now 15-4 in the Round of 64.

Michigan State is now 2-0 vs. Oklahoma State in the tournament.  They also defeated Oklahoma State 75-72 in the 1992 Sweet Sixteen.

Michigan's win is their first ever as a #7 seed.  They have now won at least one tournament game as every seed from #1 to #11 except #5.  Only Villanova has won games as more seeds (11).

Oklahoma State has now lost in the Round of 64 for the fifth consecutive time.  Their last tournament win was in 2009.  They are now 12-8 in the Round of 64.

Oklahoma State has lost 6 straight overall.  Their longest losing streak before the current one was 3.  The only teams from the 6 power conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC) that have longer tournament losing streaks are Nebraska and Oregon State with 7.  Oklahoma also lost 6 straight from 1990 to 1998.

Oklahoma State is 0-5 since 2010.  Only New Mexico State (see below) has a worse record this decade.

Oklahoma State's 91 points is the most by the losing team in a non-overtime game in the Round of 64 since UAB defeated Washington 102-100 in 2004.  It is also the most points Oklahoma State has scored in a loss.  Their previous high was 80 in an 82-80 loss to Tulsa in the 1994 Round of 32.

Baylor is in the Round of 32 for the first time since 2014.  They had lost the in the previous two tournaments.  They are now 4-4 in the Round of 64.

Baylor's 91 points is the most they have scored in tournament history (24 games).  Their previous high was 85 vs. Creighton in the 2014 Round of 32.

Baylor has 9 tournament wins since they started being seeded.  Of those 9, 7 have been as a #3 seed.

New Mexico State has now lost 10 straight tournament games which is one less than the record of 11 set by Murray State from 1988 to 2006 and tied by Iona today (see below).  Their last tournament win was in 1993 vs. Nebraska.

New Mexico State is 0-6 since 2010 which is the worst record this decade.

New Mexico State is now a tournament-worst 0-7 when playing as a member of the WAC.

Arkansas wins their 3rd straight Round of 64 game.  They are now 15-6 in the Round of 64

Arkansas's victory is their 21st as a member of the SEC.  It matches the number of tournament wins they had as a member of the SWC.  Kansas is the only other school that has won at least 21 games as a member of two different conferences.

Seton Hall loses their 3rd straight Round of 64 game.  Their last tournament win was in 2004.  They are now 7-4 in the Round of 64.

Oregon is in the Round of 32 for the fifth consecutive year.  They are now 7-4 in the Round of 64.

Oregon's win is their 8th all-time in California.  Only UCLA (27 as of this afternoon) and Arizona (17) have more wins in California.  Oregon is 8-1 when playing in California.

Oregon's 93 points is the most they have scored in tournament history (33 games).  Their previous high was 92 vs. Wake Forest in the 2002 Elite Eight.

Iona's has now lost 11 straight tournament games which ties the record set by Murray State.  Their last tournament win was in 1980 vs. Holy Cross.

Louisville is in the Round of 32 for the 5th straight year.  The are now 20-6 in the Round of 64.

Louisville is now 4-7 on St. Patrick's Day.  The 7 losses is the most all-time.

Louisville is now a tournament best 12-0 as a #2 seed.

Louisville is now 11-2 when playing in Indiana.  The 11 wins is the most all-time.

Jacksonville State loses their first tournament game ever played.  First year teams are now 2-2.

Southern California is in the Round of 32 for the first time since 2009.

Southern Methodist losses in the Round of 64 for the third straight time.  Their last tournament victory was in 1988.

North Carolina is in the Round of 32 for the 7th consecutive year.  They have won their last 15 Round of 64 games.  They are now 29-1 in the Round of 64.

North Carolina is now 13-1 on St. Patrick's Day.  The 13 wins is the most all-time.

North Carolina is now 34-3 on Fridays.  The 34 wins is the most all-time.  Kansas has a chance to tie that mark with a win tonight.

Texas Southern is now 0-7 all-time in the tournament.  Only Eastern Kentucky has more losses without a win with 8.  Belmont, Boise State, Louisiana-Monroe and Nebraska are also 0-7.

Texas Southern's 39-point loss is their largest margin of defeat in tournament history.  Their previous high was 21 vs. Arizona in the 2015 Round of 64.

The 103 points scored by North Carolina are the most Texas Southern has allowed.  The previous high was 93 also vs. Arizona in the 2015 Round of 64.

Rhode Island wins their first tournament game since 1998 when they defeated Valparaiso in the Sweet Sixteen.

Creighton's loss ends a streak of 3 Round of 64 wins.  They are now 6-8 in the Round of 64.
