Louisville Championship Facts

Louisville wins its 3rd National Championship and its first since 1986.  Louisville is now 3-0 in the Championship Game.  They tie Connecticut with the most Championships without ever losing a in the Championship Game.

Rick Pitino becomes the first coach to win a championship for two different schools.  He also won for Kentucky in 1996.

The 27-year gap between championships is the second longest gap between successive championships in tournament history.

This is the 11th championship for the state of Kentucky which ties North Carolina for the 2nd most behind California with 15.  Teams from Kentucky are 11-5 in the Championship Game.

Teams ranked #2 in the AP Poll are now 15-4 in the Championship Game.  (Louisville finished #2)

Louisville is 4-0 when playing in the State of Georgia.  That ties Louisiana State and Virginia for the best record in Georgia.

Michigan is 6-2 when playing in the State of Georgia.  The 6 wins is the most of any team in Georgia.

Louisville becomes the 6th team to win 70 NCAA Tournament games.

Final Four Postgame Facts

A Big Ten team has played a Big East team two previous times in the National Championship Game.  The Big Ten team won the previous two, both by one point.

Here are some NCAA Tournament facts about Louisville and Duke after their Elite Eight game:

Louisville is in the Final Four for the second consecutive year.  It is their 10th Final Four.

Rick Pitino is in his 7th Final Four.  He joins Roy Williams as the only coaches to take two different schools to the Final Four at least 3 times.

Louisville is 10-3 in the Elite Eight.  Rick Pitino is 7-4 in the Elite Eight.

Louisville is 2-0 vs. Duke in the tournament.  They also defeated Duke in the 1986 National Championship game.

Duke is 15-4 in the Elite Eight.  The last time they lost in the Elite Eight was in 1998 to Kentucky 86-84.  They had won their last 4 Elite Eight games.

Duke's 22-point loss is their biggest loss in an Elite Eight game.  Their previous high was 15 to New York in 1960 which was their first Elite Eight appearance.

Louisville is now 2-0 vs. the #1 team in the RPI.  It is the third consecutive year that the team that finished #1 in the RPI lost in the Elite Eight.  The last time that the #1 RPI team advanced to the Final Four was 2007 (Ohio State) and the last time #1 RPI team won the championship was 2001 (Duke).

Michigan is in their first Final Four since 1994.  It is their 7th Final Four appearance.

Michigan's 20-point victory is their second largest in an Elite Eight game.  They defeated Virginia by 37 in the 1989 Elite Eight.
