Elite Eight Tidbits - Sunday Edition

South Carolina is in the Final Four for the first time in school history.  They are the first SEC team in the Final Four other than Kentucky or Florida since 2006 when LSU went to the Final Four.

South Carolina is the fourth #7 seed to advance to the Final Four in tournament history.  It is the third time in 4 years that a #7 seed has been in the Final Four (2014-Connecticut, 2015-Michigan State)

It is the first time ever that a team from the state of South Carolina has been in the Final Four.

South Carolina is the 6th unranked team this decade to advance to the Final Four (2011-VCU, 2011-Butler, 2013-Wichita State, 2014-Kentucky, 2016-Syracuse)

South Carolina's victory over Florida is the 3rd all-time meeting between SEC teams in tournament history.  The other two were in 1986 when Kentucky defeated Alabama 68-63 in the Sweet Sixteen and LSU defeated Kentucky 59-57 in the Elite Eight.

South Carolina had 4 tournament victories before the tournament.  That is the fewest victories coming into the tournament for any Final Four participant since George Mason had no wins coming into the 2006 tournament.

Florida is 5-4 in the Elite Eight.

Florida is 2-5 vs. #7 seeds.  The 5 losses is the most all-time.  3 of the 5 losses have been when Florida was the higher seed.

This was Florida's first tournament loss playing in New York.  They are 7-1.

North Carolina is in their 20th Final Four in school history.  The 20 Final Fours is the most all-time.

North Carolina is 20-8 in the Elite Eight.

North Carolina is 3-1 vs. Kentucky in the tournament.  All four games have been in the Elite Eight.  They also defeated Kentucky in the 1977 Elite Eight and the 1995 Elite Eight.  They lost to Kentucky in the 2011 Elite Eight.

Roy Williams is in his 5th Final Four with North Carolina and his 9th overall.  The 9 Final Fours is 4th all-time behind Mike Krzyzewski (12), John Wooden (12) and Dean Smith (11).

North Carolina is 12-5 vs. the SEC.  The 12 wins is the most all-time.

Kentucky is 17-20 in the Elite Eight.  The 20 losses is the most all-time.

Kentucky is 5-11 vs. #1 seeds.  The 11 losses is tied with Louisville for the most all-time.

I love coming here for your stats every year. There is nothing better out there in March. Just curious if you are going to update the last post with the North Carolina stats. Can't wait to see what you post next -- keep up the excellent work!

I updated with North Carolina. I am sorry, was gone during game and had headache when I got home and then had to go on a business trip last week.
