Second Round Tournament Tidbits


  • The following Second Round winners are making consecutive appearances in the Sweet Sixteen (with numbers of consecutive appearances):

  • The ACC has 6 teams in the Sweet Sixteen which is a tournament record breaking the record of 5 set by the Big East in 2009 and tied by the ACC last year.  Here is the conference breakdown of Sweet Sixteen teams:

  • Indiana is now 2-3 vs. Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.  Their only other victory was 72-65 in the 1973 Elite Eight.  This was the first time they ever met before the Sweet Sixteen.
  • North Carolina is now 2-0 vs. Providence in the NCAA Tournament.  They also defeated them 79-77 in the 2014 First Round.
  • Villanova is now 2-0 vs. Iowa in the NCAA Tournament.  They also defeated them 55-54 in the 1983 Sweet Sixteen.
  • Wisconsin is now 1-1 vs. Xavier in the NCAA Tournament.  They lost to them 60-49 in the 2009 Second Round.
  • Texas A&M is now 2-0 in double overtime games in the NCAA Tournament.  That ties DePaul and Utah for second best record behind North Carolina State's 4-0 record.
  • Middle Tennessee State's 50 points was 40 less than they scored in the First Round.  The 40 point drop is the 7th largest all-time.

  • 7 coaches won their first tournament game in the First Round.  All but Greg Gard, Wisconsin, lost their Second Round game.
  • The average score in the Second Round was 71.3 up from last year's Second Round of 68.2, but down from the First Round of 72.5.  It was the highest scoring Second Round since 2009 when the average was 72.6.
  • Indiana and North Carolina are the only states with multiple teams in the Sweet Sixteen.  Both have 2.  
    • Indiana's two teams are Indiana and Notre Dame.  It is the 9th time that Indiana and Notre Dame have been in the Sweet Sixteen the same year.
    • It is the 15th time that Indiana has had 2 teams in the Sweet Sixteen, but they have never had more than 2.  The last time they had 2 was 2010 with Butler and Purdue.
