Here are some NCAA Tournament facts about Marquette and Syracuse after their Elite Eight game:

Syracuse is in the Final Four for the first time since 2003.  This is their 5th Final Four.

Syracuse joins Duke and Kansas as the only school that has been in the Final Four each of the last 5 decades.  (Note:  Decades are defined as starting with a year ending in zero.)

Jim Boeheim is in his 4th Final Four.  He has been in the Final Four in 4 different decades.

Boeheim joins Mike Krzyzewski, Rick Pitino and Dean Smith as the only coaches to go to the Final Four in 4 different decades.

Syracuse is 5-4 in the Elite Eight.  Marquette is 3-4 in the Elite Eight.

Syracuse is 14-5 as a #4 seed.  The 14 wins is tied with Louisville for the most all-time.

A #4 seed is in the Final Four for the 3rd consecutive year.  It is the second time that #4 seeds have been in the Final Four 3 consecutive years.  The other was 1995-1997.

Syracuse is a tournament-best 10-0 when allowing 50 or fewer points.  Marquette is 0-3 when scoring 50 or fewer points.

Syracuse allowed 183 points in their first four games.  That is the lowest number of points allowed by a final four team in the regional games since the field expanded in 1985.  The previous low was 191 by Villanova in 1985.  The lowest in the shot-clock era was 201 by UCLA in 2007. 

Marquette's 39 points is the fewest that they have scored in 73 tournament games.  Their previous low was 49 vs. Duke in the 1994 Sweet Sixteen and vs. Michigan State in the 2007 Round of 64.

Marquette's 39 points is also the fewest in an Elite Eight game during the shot-clock era.  The previous low was 45 by Memphis in 2006 vs. UCLA.  It is tied for the 7th fewest in the shot-clock era.

The two teams combined for 94 points which is the lowest scoring Elite Eight game in the shot-clock era.  The previous low was 95 when UCLA defeated Memphis 50-45 in 2006.

Here are some tournament facts about tonight's East Region Semifinalists:

Marquette is in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2003.  It is their 7th Elite Eight appearance.

Buzz Williams will be coaching in his first Elite Eight.

Syracuse is in the Elite Eight for the 2nd consecutive year.  It is their 9th Elite Eight appearance.

Jim Boeheim will be coaching in his 6th Elite Eight.

Kentucky and Ohio State have both been to the last 3 Sweet Sixteens.  Kentucky's streak is most likely to end even if they make the tournament.  Ohio State has a great shot to return.  Five teams (Florida, Kansas, Marquette, North Carolina and Wisconsin) have all been to the Sweet Sixteen the last two years.  All have a legitimate shot of returning with North Carolina projected as the lowest seed (#7) on yesterday's bracketology.

The question that everyone is asking (ok, maybe only me) is will the new Big East keep the history of the old Big East or will it be considered a completely new conference?  (Will this be like the Baltimore Ravens-Cleveland Browns situation?)

Biggest Win over #1 Ranked Team

With Miami's 27-point win over #1 Duke last night, I wondered what the largest defeats by #1 teams in the tournament have been.

The following are the largest margin of defeat for teams that were ranked #1 in the AP Poll entering the tournament:

Between 2006 and 2009, the #1 team was defeated by 8 or more points each year.  Only one other time in tournament history had there even been consecutive years in which the #1 team lost by 8 or more points (1959 and 1960).

Louisville in 1972 was the only team to ever lose to two "Top 5" teams in a single tournament when they lost to UCLA in the National Semifinals and North Carolina in the National Third Place game.  Of course with today's format, no team can lose more than one game in a single tournament.

Wisconsin and Brigham Young's RPI's put them on the bubble.  However, Wisconsin will most likely get in due to the fact that their strength of schedule will increase with playing in the Big Ten.

West Virginia, Xavier, Purdue and Texas will need to improve to be able to continue their string of tournament appearances.

If Texas misses the tournament, it would be the 9th time since 2000 that a double-digit streak has been snapped.
