Round of 64 - Friday - Session #3 - Tournament Tidbits

Oklahoma State is 39-27 in the NCAA Tournament

Oklahoma State wins their first tournament game since 2009 when they defeated Tennessee 77-75 in the Round of 64.  They end a 6-game tournament losing streak.

Oklahoma State is now 20-7 on Fridays.  They are 19-20 all other days of the week combined.

Liberty is 1-5 in the NCAA Tournament.

Wisconsin is 39-23 in the NCAA Tournament

Wisconsin is 2-1 vs. North Carolina.  They lost to North Carolina 88-82 in the 2005 Elite Eight and defeated them 79-72 in the 2015 Sweet Sixteen.

Wisconsin is in the Round of 32 for the first time since 2017.

North Carolina is 126-48 in the NCAA Tournament

The NCAA Tournament expanded to 32 teams in 1975.  This is the first tournament in that era in which neither Duke nor North Carolina will be in the Final 32.

North Carolina’s loss is only their 2^nd Round of 64 loss in school history.  They are now 31-2.  Their only other loss was 76-74 to Weber State in 1999.

North Carolina’s loss ends a 17-game Round of 64 winning streak and streak of 9 consecutive tournaments appearing in the Round of 32.

Roy Williams loses in the Round of 64 for the first time in his career.  He is now 29-1.  With the loss, Dean Smith now has the most wins (13) without a loss in the Round of 64.

The loss by North Carolina ends an 8-game winning streak against #9 seeds.

Houston is 30-26 in the NCAA Tournament

Houston is in the Round of 32 for the 3^rd consecutive tournament

Cleveland State is 3-3 in the NCAA Tournament

Cleveland State loses in the Round of 64 for the first time.  They are now 2-1 in the Round of 64.

Cleveland State’s 56 points is the fewest that they have scored in 6 tournament games.  Their previous low was 57 vs. Arizona in the 2009 Round of 32.

North Texas wins their first ever NCAA Tournament game.  They are now 1-3.

With North Texas’s win, the C-USA Tournament Champion has won in the Round of 64 in 5 of the last 6 tournaments.  The C-USA team was a double-digit seed in all 5 games.

Purdue is 42-32 in the NCAA Tournament

Purdue snaps a 3-game Round of 64 winning streak

Purdue’s loses as a Top 4 seed in the Round of 64 for the first time in tournament history.  They were previously 12-0 in the Round of 64 as a Top 4 seed.

Purdue’s 69 points is the fewest that North Texas has allowed in 4 tournament games.  Their previous low allowed was 73 vs. Memphis in the 2007 Round of 64.

Round of 64 - Friday - Session #2 - Tournament Tidbits

Oral Roberts is 3-5 in the NCAA Tournament.  They win for the first time since 1974 when they defeated Louisville 96-93 in the Sweet Sixteen.        

Oral Roberts is the 9^th #15 seed to win a Round of 64 game over a #2 seed.  It is the first time a #15 has won an overtime game.

Ohio State is 57-33 in the NCAA Tournament.  The loss ends a 3-game winning streak in the Round of 64.

Ohio State is the 2^nd Big Ten #2 seed to lose to a #15 seed.  Michigan State lost to Middle Tennessee State in 2016.

Baylor is 15-14 in the NCAA Tournament

Baylor is in the Round of 32 for the 2^nd consecutive tournament

Big Twelve teams are now 5-0 vs. the America East

Hartford played in their first NCAA Tournament game.  It was the 3^rd time that Baylor was the opponent in a team’s first tournament game.  The other two were Brigham Young in 1950 and South Dakota State in 2012.

Loyola Chicago is 14-5 in the NCAA Tournament

Loyola is 3-0 in the Round of 64.  They tie Tulane for the most wins in the Round of 64 without a loss.

Georgia Tech is 23-17 in the NCAA Tournament

Georgia Tech's loss is only the 4th time that the ACC Tournament Champion has lost in the Round of 64.  All four losses were double-digit losses.  The others were:

Oregon State is 13-20 in the NCAA Tournament

Oregon State's win is their first tournament win since 1982 when they defeated Idaho 60-42 in the Sweet Sixteen.  They end a 7-game tournament losing streak.

Oregon State's win is their first in the Round of 64.  They were previously 0-6 in the Round of 64.

Tennessee is 22-24 in the NCAA Tournament

The loss ends a 3-game winning streak in the Round of 64 for Tennessee

It is the first time that Tennessee has lost to a double-digit seed in the Round of 64.

Florida is 48-20 in the NCAA Tournament

Florida is 15-3 on Fridays.  They have now won their last 10 games played on a Friday.

Florida is 7-1 vs. ACC.  They have won 6 in a row vs the ACC.  Their only loss was 70-65 to Duke in 1994 Final Four.

Florida is 18-5 in Round of 64. They have won their last 8 Round of 64 games.  They are in the Round of 32 for 4^th consecutive tournament.

Virginia Tech is 8-12 in the NCAA Tournament

Virginia Tech is now 0-3 vs. SEC

Virginia Tech is 5-2 on Fridays.  They have now lost on two consecutive Fridays after winning their first 5.

Arkansas is 43-32 in the NCAA Tournament

Eric Musselman is the 7^th coach to win a tournament game for Arkansas

Arkansas is in the Round of 32 for first time since 2017

Arkansas is 6-1 on March 19.  They have more tournament wins on March 19 than any other date.

Colgate is 0-4 in the NCAA Tournament

Colgate is 0-2 vs. the SEC.  They lost to Tennessee in the Round of 64 in the 2019 Tournament.

Arkansas's 85 points is the most allowed by Colgate in 4 tournament games.  Their previous high allowed was 82 vs. Kansas in the 1995 Round of 64.

Illinois is 41-31 in the NCAA Tournament

Brad Underwood is the 7th coach to win a tournament game for Illinois

Illinois wins their first tournament game since defeating Colorado 57-49 in the 2013 Round of 64.  The 8-year drought is their longest since 1981 when they ended an 18-year drought in tournament wins.

Illinois is 6-1 playing in Indianapolis.  Out of the teams playing in the Round of 64, that is the most tournament wins in the city of Indianapolis.

Drexel is 1-5 in the NCAA Tournament

Drexel was playing in their first tournament since 1996 when they defeated Memphis in the Round of 64

Drexel's 29-point margin of loss is their largest in 6 tournament games.  Their previous high was a 24-point loss to Oklahoma State in the 1995 Round of 64.

Texas Tech is 17-18 in the NCAA Tournament, but Chris Beard is 9-2.

Utah State is 6-24 in the NCAA Tournament.  Their .200 winning percentage is the worst for any team with at least 25 tournament games.

First Four Tournament Tidbits

Texas Southern is now 2-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.  Their only other win was 64-46 over North Carolina Central in the 2018 First Four.

Johnny Jones, Texas Southern Coach, wins his first tournament game in 4 tries.  He lost first round games in 2007 and 2010 for North Texas and 2015 for Louisiana State.  The 14 years between his first tournament and first tournament win is tied for the 6th most all-time.

NCAA Tournament Selection Tidbits

Michigan State has the lowest RPI of any at-large team in tournament history at #95.  The previous low was New Mexico at #74 in 1999.  Wisconsin also had a lower RPI at #76 this year.

Jim Boeheim will be coaching in his 35th tournament.  He will tie Mike Krzyzewski for the most all-time.

Championship Game Tidbits

Virginia wins their first National Championship.

Virginia's championship is the 15th for the ACC tying the Pacific Twelve for the most all-time.  It is the ACC's 3rd championship in the last 5 years.

The last Pacific Twelve team to win a National Championship was Arizona in 1997.  Since then the ACC has won 8 National Championships.

Virginia is the first team from the state of Virginia to win a National Championship.

Tony Bennett becomes the 3rd coach to win the championship in his first appearance in the title game since 2014.  Jay Wright (Villanova, 2016) and Kevin Ollie (Connecticut, 2014) won in their first appearance.

With Virginia winning, it is the 3rd straight year that a #1 seed has won a National Championship.

Texas Tech loses to the team that won the championship for the second consecutive tournament.  They lost to Villanova in the Elite Eight last year.  Before last year, the only other time they lost to the eventual champion was 1961 when they lost to Cincinnati in the Sweet Sixteen.

Virginia is the first team to win two overtime games in a single tournament since 2000 (Seton Hall).  They are the first National Champion to win two overtime games in a single tournament since 1997 (Arizona).
